About AVE
AVE trains are operated by the Spanish national rail company Renfe. AVE Renfe trains use high-speed routes to connect major Spanish cities. They are used on most services between Spain and France, and AVE Spanish trains operate on many routes from the Spanish capital, connecting Madrid to Barcelona, Seville, Alicante, Leon, and many more. AVE Spain trains are high-speed, running at up to 190 mph (310km/h). Traveling with AVE is a good idea since they are comfortable and offer many onboard amenities. AVE train: Type of tickets
AVE trains offer three types of tickets: Basico, Elige, and Premium. Here is how each ticket works.
- Basico:These AVE train tickets are the equivalent of standard class. Basico tickets are the cheapest. Basico tickets cannot be refunded or exchanged, and you won’t be able to select your seat, though this option is available for an additional cost.
- Elige:Elige tickets offer more flexibility for exchanges and cancellations. With Elige tickets, you can change trains, cancel, and if you miss your train, you’ll get the next one at a discounted price. Seat selection is also an option for an additional cost, and you can also upgrade to Premium.
- Premium:Premium Renfe AVE tickets are the most expensive and offer the most flexibility. They only apply exclusively to Confort. Changing to a different train is free, and if you miss your train, you can catch the next train for free.

AVE Renfe train from Madrid to Barcelona
Whether you're visiting Barcelona for a match at Camp Nou, or you're visiting for a walk across La Rambla, this is the train for you. And now you can take one of the three Renfe Ave trains, including the OUIGO and Avlo trains.
- Renfe AVE has at least eight trains operating between Madrid and Barcelona every day.
- The trains offer direct services and are available from around 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- The fastest AVE Madrid Barcelona Renfe train takes around 2h 50min, and leaves from Madrid-Puerta de Atocha heading into Barcelona Sants.
Services on board AVE Spanish trains
The following are the services offered on board AVE trains:
- AVE trains offer first-class and standard class tickets.
- Free Wi-Fi is available in all classes.
- Power outlets and at-seat radios are also provided for every passenger.
- Each passenger is allowed up to three pieces of luggage on AVE Renfe trains, but the combined weight mustn’t exceed 55 lbs. (25 kg).
- Bicycles are allowed on board for free but must be folded/disassembled and packed in a bike bag.
- Pets under 22 lbs. (10 kg) are welcome on board, but they must travel in a pet carrier.

- AVE trains have a buffet car or café that serves food and drinks and is accessible to all passengers.
AVE: Night trains
Traveling at night can be a great experience. If you’re on a tight schedule or budget, it saves you from spending the night at a hotel and gets you to your destination in great time. There are a couple of AVE night trains operating on various routes. However, with AVE being a high-speed train, most of these journeys take under 4 hours and can still be made during the day.
