Traveling from Athens to Mykonos by ferry felt like the perfect way to begin a Greek island trip (and to start summer too!). There’s something special about leaving the “ancient” mainland behind and slowly watching the Cyclades appear on the horizon: the journey itself becomes part of the experience (oh and the breeze!).

A nice and secluded beach access in Mykonos.
The ferry from Athens to Mykonos takes between 2.5 and 5 hours depending on the type of ferry and sea conditions, covering roughly 180 kilometers (112 miles) across the Aegean Sea. Most ferries depart from Piraeus Port and arrive at Mykonos New Port.
I bought my ferry ticket through Omio, and honestly, it made the entire process incredibly simple. I could compare ferry companies, schedules, and travel times all in one place without having to open multiple tabs. Since there are both high-speed and conventional ferries on this route, I liked being able to choose based on my budget and preferred travel style: I chose the fastest one because I couldn't wait to start my vacation.
Piraeus Port can feel busy at first, especially during summer (it’s literally overflowing with tourists), but once I located my gate everything became much easier. I arrived about an hour and a half early, which gave me enough time to check the displays and grab a quick freddo espresso before boarding.
Oh the arrival in Mykonos! It really is an unforgettable experience. The bright blue sea, white buildings, and warm air immediately make you feel like you’ve arrived somewhere special. From the port, buses and taxis make it easy to continue toward Mykonos Town or the beaches.
Ferries run several times a day, especially during the summer season. Morning departures tend to be the most popular because they allow you to make the most of your day.
I chose a high-speed ferry, which was modern and comfortable, with indoor seating and snack bars onboard. Sitting outside for part of the trip was definitely the highlight - the sea breeze and views alone make the journey worth it.
My ticket cost around €50, though prices usually range between €35 and €90 depending on the season (summer tends to be more expensive of course) and ferry type.
