When I was planning my trip from Naples to Sorrento, I kept coming across the same warnings about the Circumvesuviana train. Travel forums made it sound chaotic, overcrowded, and full of pickpockets. Naturally, that only made me more curious. Instead of avoiding it, I decided to take the train myself and see whether the experience was really as dramatic as people online suggested.

Street in Sorrento with sea view
The Circumvesuviana is a local railway that connects Naples with several towns around Mount Vesuvius and the Sorrento Peninsula. The line starts at Napoli Porta Nolana and ends in Sorrento, stopping at numerous towns along the way. Some of these stops are well-known destinations in their own right. For example, Pompei Scavi is the station closest to the archaeological site of Pompeii. The official journey time to Sorrento is around 1 hour and 10 minutes, although it can take a little longer depending on the day and the number of passengers.
Before boarding the train, I had read plenty of stories online describing how crowded the Circumvesuviana could be and warning about pickpockets. So I stepped onto the train expecting a slightly chaotic experience. It’s true that the train can get busy, especially during popular travel times. But on the day I took it to visit the archaeological area near Pompeii, the atmosphere was actually much calmer than I had expected. Most passengers seemed to be doing completely ordinary things: commuters heading to work, travelers visiting Pompeii, and locals getting on and off at the small towns along the line.
While many travelers board the train at Napoli Garibaldi, which is connected to Napoli Centrale, I chose to start my journey at Napoli Porta Nolana instead. It’s only about a ten-minute walk from the main station, but since it’s the first stop on the line, the trains begin their journey there. That usually means the carriages are noticeably emptier than they are at later stations.
After roughly an hour and several stops along the way, the train finally reached the last station on the line: Sorrento. The station is located close to the town center, making it easy to walk toward the historic streets of the old town or down toward the marina overlooking the Bay of Naples.
Circumvesuviana trains between Naples and Sorrento run regularly throughout the day, usually every 30 minutes or so. Because the train stops at many towns along the route, the journey takes a bit longer than some other transport options. However, it remains one of the most direct and convenient ways to reach Sorrento from Naples.
The trains themselves are fairly simple and somewhat dated. Some carriages also lack strong air conditioning, which can make the journey less comfortable during the hotter months. As the train continued along the route, more passengers boarded at the intermediate stops. By the time we passed Pompeii, most seats were taken and a few people were standing. Still, the trip felt like a normal regional train journey rather than the chaotic experience I had imagined from reading online.
One of the biggest advantages of the Circumvesuviana is the price. It’s easily the cheapest way to travel between Naples and Sorrento. I bought my ticket through Omio, and the journey cost about €4.60. Here’s roughly what my travel costs looked like:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €4.60 |
| Food & drinks | €0 |
| Travel to departure station | €2 |
| Travel from arrival station | €0 |
| Total | € 6.6 |
Traveling from Naples to Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana can feel like a small adventure. The trains aren’t luxurious and they can become crowded, but the journey itself is simple and extremely affordable. In the end, the experience was far more ordinary than the dramatic stories I had read online. For less than five euros, it’s hard to complain about a train that takes you all the way to the Sorrento coast.
