Scandinavian Airlines System, better known as SAS, is the main airline in Denmark. It is a flag carrier airline for Sweden and Norway, as well as Denmark, and it has been active since 1946. The main hub for SAS is in Copenhagen, but it also has secondary hubs in Oslo and Stockholm.

SAS has a fleet of several dozen aircraft. All of its own planes are Airbus planes, but it also has a contracted fleet that includes planes from Bombardier and Embraer. It uses these planes across more than 100 routes. These routes include connections between Scandinavian countries, but SAS also flies to destinations around the world.

There are a few other airlines based in Denmark, but these typically cover regional routes. They include SUN-AIR of Scandinavia, which is actually a franchise of British Airways and flies from the city of Billund to a few locations. It has offered many more routes in the past, including flights from Denmark to regional airports in Humberside and Cambridge in the United Kingdom, but these have since been terminated.

DAT, which stands for Danish Air Transport, is a larger carrier that offers chartered and scheduled routes, as well as cargo flights. Alsie Express is even smaller, with just a couple of planes in its fleet at the time of writing.

Main Airports in Denmark

Copenhagen Airport is the biggest airport in Denmark and if not for Oslo Airport handling a couple of million more passengers per year, it would be the biggest in Scandinavia (a title it has held in the past).

The airport sits on the island of Amager and is about 8 km (5 mi) from the center of Copenhagen. There is a railway station underneath the airport’s terminals that forms part of the Øresund Railway Line and provides a range of connections to Copenhagen and nearby cities in both Denmark and Sweden.

The M2 metro line also connects to the airport and there are buses that depart every 15 minutes (20 minutes during the night) and take passengers to airport car parks and nearby bus stops. These buses are free to use.

Copenhagen Airport has restaurants, cafes, and kiosks where you can grab some food and drink. There are lots of shops too, including electronics stores, clothing stores, jewelry stores, and even a dedicated LEGO store—Denmark is the home of the famous colorful blocks, after all.

Billund Airport is the second-busiest in Denmark. Located in the city of Billund (where the founder of LEGO was born and raised and where you can find his final resting place), it’s a popular destination for charter flights and also handles a great deal of cargo flights that enter and leave Denmark.

Billund Airport is just a couple of kilometers away from the city, and there are buses that connect to destinations across the city, as well as cities like Aarhus.

Aarhus has an airport of its own, but it’s nearly 36 km (22.3 mi) from the city that bears its name. Aarhus Airport is also much smaller than Copenhagen and Billund airports, carrying around 300,000 to 500,000 passengers a year.

Aalborg Airport is bigger, with passenger numbers that regularly exceed 1 million per year.

Before your Danish flight—Preparation for Departure

Preparation is essential to ensure a stress-free flight to Denmark. There are a few things you can do before you leave to make sure everything goes smoothly.

First, consider checking in online if possible. It means you can save time at the airport, skipping the queues and going straight to security. Speaking of which, you’ll want to be able to breeze through those security lines without any bleeps, beeps, and drama, so don’t wear any clothing or shoes that contain a lot of metal, and make sure you follow the instructions signposted throughout.

These instructions remind you that all liquids must be packed in a clear 1-liter bag, with only one of these bags allowed per customer. You’ll also need to keep anything that could potentially be seen as a weapon or an explosive out of your hand luggage. This includes some things that you might not consider to be all that dangerous, including scissors, knitting needles, and power banks.

If you need syringes to take prescription medication, ask your doctor to write you a note and keep that note in your hand luggage or on your person. You should also take a prescription with you, as well as all of the medications that you will need for your trip.

All electronics, including laptops and phones, must be taken out of your hand luggage and placed in the trays provided. To avoid any delays while going through this process, make sure all of these items are placed near the top of your bag and that your bag isn’t overstuffed (the last thing you want is to be playing Tetris with your hand luggage on the floor of the security area).

After your Danish flight—after landing

When you arrive at your destination, you will need to go through passport control. If you checked any luggage, you’ll need to enter the departure hall and wait for it to arrive on the conveyor belt. You can change some money after this or even while you wait.

Denmark uses the kroner and not the Euro. Debit cards and credit cards are accepted by most merchants in the country, but there are some merchants that only take cash and some services where it’s better to use cash. So, while we don’t recommend changing all of your holiday budget for Kroner, we do recommend keeping a few notes in your pocket.

There are bus routes for the other airports in Denmark as well. In fact, the public transportation network in Denmark is one of the best in Europe.
