Getting the train from London to Liverpool is the fastest and most convenient way to travel between these two vibrant cities. Clean and modern trains with excellent onboard facilities transport you in comfort and style. In this guide, I’ll share my top tips to make your journey from London to Liverpool by train a breeze!

A large departure board inside London Euston station, showing train times and platforms.
Journey times on trains from London to Liverpool average 2 hours 22 minutes on a direct train, which is more than twice as quick as the fastest coach to Liverpool! Avanti West Coast is the only operator that provides direct services, which makes it the best way to get from London to Liverpool. It’s also possible to use West Midlands Railway, which could work out cheaper for the budget-conscious traveler, but this requires a change of trains. West Midlands trains are more suited to short journeys, so for speed and convenience, I choose Avanti West Coast every time.
Booking on Omio was easy: I chose my time and class of travel, and within moments, my ticket was on my phone and ready to use! The London to Liverpool train passes through some wonderful countryside and is a much more comfortable experience than taking the coach or driving. I grab my refreshments from the onboard shop and sit back with a chilled glass of white wine, enjoying the wonderful views. And if I’m feeling particularly flush, I’ll upgrade to First Class and enjoy some delicious complimentary meals, too!

Trains from London to Liverpool depart from London Euston station and arrive at Liverpool Lime Street station. Euston is located just 15 minutes by tube from London’s main tourist sites and is well-connected to London’s Underground system. The Northern and Victoria lines both serve the station directly, and Euston Square is just a short 5-minute walk away. Avanti West Coast operates 20 trains per day, departing at least once per hour, between 6 AM and 10 PM, so there’s always a train that suits my itinerary. I prefer trains departing after 9 AM, which are often quieter and cheaper!
On arrival in Liverpool Lime Street, onward travel can be made either by Merseyrail, local buses, or from the adjacent taxi rank.
Boarding the train at Euston is simple — tickets are checked at the platform entrance, so have your tickets ready to show the inspector. Most trains from London to Liverpool are on newer ‘Evero’ trains, but some are still operated by the classic ‘Pendolino’ train, although both have the same features. You’ll have a table, UK-style power socket, USB charging point and even wireless charging! There’s an onboard shop selling sandwiches, snacks and drinks, including alcohol. I’m a big fan of the cheeseburger! You can even order online using the reliable Wi-Fi network and have food delivered to your seat. Prices are reasonable, but I find it’s cheaper to buy before you board. You’ll also find a free water refill point!

Cheap advance tickets go on sale 12 weeks before departure, so the sooner you book, the cheaper it will be. However, it’s still possible to find good deals just a few hours before those spontaneous trips! You can also get a discount if you buy a railcard or travel in a group.
